We’re excited to share that the new walking and cycling route along Fourth Avenue in Harlow is open!
This east–west corridor runs from Elizabeth Way in the west to Netteswell Orchard, just north of Harlow Town Centre. It’s designed to make walking and cycling safer, easier, and more enjoyable for everyone.
Following a public consultation in Autumn 2023 — which included online information and an in-person event — the scheme was completed on 1st October 2024, with funding from Active Travel England.
What’s included in the improvements?
A fully kerb-separated cycleway and footway for most of the route
Reconstructed pavements to improve surface quality
New kerbing throughout the route
Better signage and road markings for cyclists
Upgraded street furniture, including cycle bollards
Vegetation cleared to open up the route
Tactile paving improved to meet accessibility standards
New street lighting for better visibility and safety
New and upgraded crossings:
Hodings Road (West) Junction – A raised crossing now gives priority to people walking and cycling
Hodings Road (East) Junction – Upgraded to a parallel crossing for smoother, safer journeys
This project is part of our ongoing commitment to creating safer, greener, and healthier travel options across Essex.
