Electrifying Essex campaign

Our new Electrifying Essex campaign highlights the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) and the growing support available to help you make the switch.

The launch of the campaign comes as we begin an ambitious £8.3 million programme to install 5,000 new public EV charging points across the county.

With thousands of new charging points on the way, we're helping make it easier than ever to consider going electric with your next car.

Follow the campaign via our Safer Greener Healthier Facebook page.

Why switch to electric?

5,000 new public charging points

We're Electrifying Essex by installing thousands of new public charging points to support more people to consider a switch to an electric vehicle.

Installations will start this summer, with operators installing 5,000 new charging points in on-street locations and in public car parks throughout Essex by 2031.

The £8.3 million programme, funded by the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, will help support people without access to home charging. It will also provide convenient access for drivers to charge their vehicles when they're away from home or on a longer journey.

We also recently completed a separate programme which has seen an initial 62 new public charging points installed in locations including Basildon, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Colchester and Harlow.

Check out our EV charging map to see where we have already installed new charging sockets and the others we have planned. More information about the locations of the new charging points will be published shortly.

Suggest a location

We want your ideas for where our new on-street charging points should be installed.

We also want to hear from businesses and organisations which would be interested in having charging points installed in their public car parks or other publicly accessible areas of their land.

William (Harlow)
What motivated you to switch?
Getting a new car via my company’s salary sacrifice.
How has it changed your day‑to‑day travel?
EVs are quieter than ICE car. My new EV is more comfortable than a car I’ve owned before.
What are the benefits?
Cheaper running cost. I like the car’s Camp / sleep mode, vehicle to load function
What has been your experience of charging your vehicle?
Home charging on octopus intelligent Go tariff is a no brainer. Public charging when on long trips is a doddle now that the charging infrastructure is getting better by the months
Would you recommend the switch?
ABSOLUTELY
What do you wish you had known sooner?
CROSS PAVEMENT CHANNELS so I don’t trail my charging cable over pavement. I’m waiting to hear from Essex County Council on when they can start funding the installation of these channels
