Sawyers Hall Lane

Creating Safer Streets Around Sawyers Hall Lane

In 2023, we launched the first phase of our Safer Streets for Schools project on Sawyers Hall Lane which can be found here. Thanks to additional funding from Active Travel England, we were able to make even more improvements after working closely with local school communities to understand what changes would make the biggest difference.

In Nov 2024, these improvements were made:

  • Permanent footway widening and safety bollards
  • Vegetation clearance
  • Safer tactile crossing points have been added
  • A raised section of road (called a “raised table”) has been installed to slow traffic
  • Pedestrian Guard Railing has been added to improve safety
  • Park and Stride – As well as William Hunter Way and Chatham Way car park, Doddinghurst Community Church have kindly agreed to offer their car park as a safe place to park and walk the rest of the way to school
  • School Street Enforcement – We’ve now recruited a dedicated officer to help enforce restrictions and encourage considerate parking to start September 25

What’s we've also offered the schools:

  • School Travel Plans – We’re supporting schools to create or continue their plans with help from our Travel Plan team
  • Active Travel Pledges – We encourage pupils to sign these each year to promote healthy, sustainable travel
  • Car Sharing Materials – Encouraging families to share lifts where possible
  • Sustainable Travel Route Maps – Helping families find the best walking and cycling routes
  • Bikeability Training – Cycle safety training for pupils
  • Pedestrian Road Safety Training – Teaching children how to stay safe on foot
  • Educational Materials – Including resources on air quality and anti-idling

📸 Photos of the improvements — including widened footways, cleared vegetation, pencil bollards, and new pedestrian railings — can be found on the right-hand side of this page (if you're on a laptop) or at the bottom (if you're using a phone or tablet).
