Hawthorn Avenue

The Sustainable Transport team at Essex County Council has received funding through the Active Travel Fund 4 scheme which will allow us to make improvements.

A survey and school gate event took place to shape the changes on the street. A selection of physical measures were explored in 2024, including:

  • A new raised zebra crossing to slow traffic and improve conditions when crossing.
  • New speed cushions.
  • New pencil-shaped bollards.
  • More law enforcement presence.
  • Replacement illuminated bollards to improve conditions when crossing.

Construction of a raised zebra crossing, speed cushions and carriageway resurfacing will be taking place during 24th of January - 23rd February. The works will be completed over a combination of nights, weekends and daytime working (daytime half-term working only).

Behaviour measures:

  • Creating and or continuing a School Travel Plan with our coordinator Nick Hill.
  • Active Travel Pledges. Please find the Primary and Secondary pledges here.
  • Car Sharing.
  • Sustainable travel route maps.
  • Bikeability Training for pupils (please note Infant schools are not included). Please see the link on the right (laptop) or bottom (phone) for more information
  • Pedestrian Training Road Safety Course.
  • Educational Materials. (see attached and can you link to the Anti-idling campaign on the Air Quality website: What can I do? | Essex Air)
  • We are seeking to employ more Enforcement Officers to patrol school streets and enforce current restrictions and encourage considerate parking behaviours

Priorities for future funding include:

  • Introducing more green space, speed limits and signage.
  • Exploring additional crossing points.
  • Widening footpaths.
  • Introducing segregated cycle paths.

Please see the full engagement results report for more detail.
