Creating Safer Streets Around Wickford

In 2023, we completed the first phase of our Safer Streets for Schools project for schools around Nevendon Road which can be seen here. After engagement with the local school communities to help us understand what further measures could be implemented, additional funding from Active Travel England allowed us to completed the following improvements in March 2025:

  • School Street sign on Oakhurst Drive
  • Refresh existing double yellows and school keep clears outside Grange Avenue
  • Refresh existing double yellows and school keep clears outside North Crescent and extension of protective railings outside the school to improve crossing arrangements
  • Nevendon Road and side Roads: 20mph roundels, slow markings and repeaters along the length of Nevenden road and side roads
  • Bikeability Training – Cycle safety training for pupils

What’s we've also offered the schools:

  • School Travel Plans – We’re supporting schools to create or continue their plans with help from our Travel Plan team
  • Active Travel Pledges – We encourage pupils to sign these each year to promote healthy, sustainable travel
  • Car Sharing Materials – Encouraging families to share lifts where possible
  • Sustainable Travel Route Maps – Helping families find the best walking and cycling routes
  • Pedestrian Road Safety Training – Teaching children how to stay safe on foot
  • Educational Materials – Including resources on air quality and anti-idling

Priorities for future funding include:

  • School Street Enforcement – officer will more frequently enforce restrictions as well as encourage considerate parking
  • New parking restrictions
  • Drop-off / park and stride locations
  • Resurfaced roads
