Essex Pedal Power is a community-based project which was originally piloted in Clacton and Jaywick Sands in 2021 but has now been rolled out to Basildon, Colchester (Greenstead), Canvey Island and Harwich. Free quality bikes are given out to qualifying residents to encourage them to become more active and enable them to travel to work, school, college, the shops and leisure facilities.
Under the scheme, the bikes are loaned for a year, however, if the traceable GPS tracker indicates that the bikes are being used regularly, residents can keep the bike.
So far 2,525 bikes have been given out and just over 294,000 kms have been cycled which is the equivalent of 73. times around the planet!
Additional support services are being delivered including training packages to help residents to learn to ride a bike and basic bike maintenance training as well as new cycle infrastructure.
